Watch virtuoso picker Sierra Hull get back to her bluegrass roots with the Cort Core-OC Mahogany acoustic
Affordably-priced model boats all-solid construction, open pore finish and Fishman electronics
Cort recently unveiled the Core-OC Collection, a new series of all-solid, extremely affordable acoustic guitars. The range boasts three models, the Core-OC Blackwood, Core-OC Spruce and Core-OC Mahogany, and if you haven’t had the chance to try one out for yourself yet, get ready to be wowed – bluegrass virtuoso Sierra Hull certainly was when she recently got her hands on a Core-OC Mahogany in Black Burst.
“It’s been pretty cool checking this one out because it reminds of my very first guitar that I ever owned as a kid,” Sierra says shortly after unboxing the guitar. “It’s bringing back some good nostalgic memories.”
As Hull explains, the concept behind the Core-OC Collection is “basically just taking the ‘core’ essentials, trying to strip away all the fancy stuff and really getting down to what makes a good guitar.”
This, of course, starts with great wood, and Sierra’s Core-OC sports all-solid mahogany construction along with a mahogany neck with dovetail joint and 20-fret ovangkol fingerboard.
Other features include a 25.3" scale length, die-cast tuners, a bone nut and saddle and hand-scalloped X bracing.
The Core-OC Mahogany also boasts an OM body shape with a Venetian cutaway, which allows for “all kinds of access all the way up the neck, if you’re feeling extra adventurous,” Hull says. “The guitar plays really easy up there, and not all guitars do, even with the cutaway.”
Additionally, an open-pore finish “allows the natural woods to breathe and resonate, and just makes for a really light guitar,” Hull points out.
What’s more, she continues, “if you want to plug in, you can,” thanks to the pristine amplified sounds offered via the onboard Fishman Sonitone electronics and Sonicore pickup.
“So you’re pretty well set with everything you need with this guitar,” Hull says. “And because they’ve stripped away all the non-essential stuff and got down to the nitty gritty of what makes a good guitar, it’s also super-affordable.”
Hull concludes, “If you’re looking for a guitar that you can just take out on the weekend with you, on a road trip and not worry too much about, or maybe you’re just looking for a guitar to get you going, this is a great guitar for that.”
