Watch singer-songwriter Alexx Calise demo the player-friendly Breedlove Discovery S acoustic
Fully sustainable model boasts resonant African mahogany core, thinner neck profile and super-affordable price tag
Breedlove has been producing incredible-sounding – and, significantly, fully sustainable – acoustic guitars for years now, and the company is continuing its impressive run with the new Discovery S.
Part of Breedlove’s new sustainable ECO Collection, the Discovery S boasts EcoTonewood technology, which replaces the soft center core usually found in laminate builds with a layer of individually harvested African mahogany. The design, according to Breedlove, provides for three layers of real tonewood, giving the acoustic a more impactful midrange and making laminate construction more sustainable.
Combined with the Discovery S model's solid Sitka spruce top and eye-catching finish, the result is an instrument that sounds and looks great at an affordable price, while being kind to the earth, to boot.
And in fact, the Discovery S has already made a fan out of independent singer-songwriter Alexx Calise, who took the acoustic for a spin in the above demo video.
“There are a few unique key things about this guitar,” Alexx begins. “As you can see, it has a real cool finish, and that’s called the Edgeburst finish. There’s also African mahogany at its core, which gives it a really nice tonal quality.”
She continues, “For a concert body, it’s more resonant than I thought. It has a really nice cutaway, which makes for easier playability, and the thinner neck makes it easier to fly up and down the fretboard.”
Indeed, the Discovery S boasts an African mahogany neck with a thinner profile, making it ideal for beginner’s hands. There’s also an ovangkol fingerboard with a comfortable radius and a pinless Delta bridge for simple string changing.
It all adds up to an easy grab-and-go workhorse.
“What I love about this guitar is that it just begs to be picked up because of the smaller size and weight,” Alexx says. “It’s a great option if you’re small like me or you just like to travel with your instrument.”
And just because the Discovery S is beginner-friendly, that doesn’t mean that people of all playing levels can’t enjoy it.
“As a matter of fact,” Alexx says, “a lot of Breedlove’s artists and pros use it because it’s built road tough and it sounds just as great as guitars twice the price.”
What’s more, the Edgeburst model comes with Fishman Presys I electronics, for incredible plugged-in tones, and all at under $500.
“And here’s actually the coolest part,” Alexx says, “The guitar is made using all sustainable wood. So Breedlove is not being good to your wallet, they’re being good to the earth, too.”
