Watch R.J. Ronquillo try out Bog Street’s innovative three-sided picks, the “Swiss Army knife in your toolbox”
Unique plectrums offer multiple picks in one, with various gauges, colors and surfaces
Guitarists can obsess over gear to no end. But we often don’t give much thought to what pick we use – which is odd, given that it’s the first point of contact between ourselves and our instruments.
Indeed, as noted guitarist, YouTuber and all-around “edu-tainer” R.J. Ronquillo points out in the above demo video, “We love our guitars, we love playing around with pedals, but picks are usually an afterthought or something we put on the back burner.”
In this video, he continues, “I wanted to talk about the importance of picks and experimenting with different ones."
As Ronquillo says, “it’s not about finding the one perfect pick. It’s more about discovering different picks and how they suit different styles of playing and possibly improve your improve your playing or a certain technique and style, and help you discover new sounds, tones and a new feel on the guitar.”
And to be sure, there’s no pick design out there right now that does all these things – and more – better than Bog Street’s range of innovative three-sided plectrums.
“It might be the Swiss Army knife in your toolbox,” Ronquillo says.
First up is Bog Street’s LEAP Series. “As you can tell, there’s three different sides to this, and each side is a different gauge and kind of a different shape,” Ronquillo says.
The three-sided ergonomic plectrum boasts a contour on one side that is designed to provide stability and comfort to the thumb, while the opposite side offers freedom of motion and control for the index finger.
A hole in the center of the grip, meanwhile, allows the thumb and index finger to make contact while playing, which Bog Street says will improve feel and comfort during playing.
The LEAP is being offered in two models— Lead, designed for electric guitarists, and Rhythm, for acoustic players, and each model features three different pick gauges for each point.
Up next is the Axe Series, which includes three different models, the Axe Cut, the Axe Blade and the Battle Axe. All three offer various gauges, as well as a range of colors and with the option of textured or smooth surfaces.
Indeed, the options are endless. “If you’re looking for a different kind of pick or willing to try something new, definitely check these out,” Ronquillo says.
His final assessment? “The slogan on Bog Street’s website is, ‘We’re totally overthinking the guitar pick.’ And that statement couldn’t be more true. These are some of the most unique pick designs that I’ve tried.”
