Watch Paul Riario test drive the innovative Martin SC-10E, which “goes above and beyond what an acoustic is capable of in terms of playability and tone”
Groundbreaking design offers electric-guitar comfort in an affordable and well-appointed acoustic package
A few years back, Martin virtually redefined the acoustic guitar with the introduction of its groundbreaking SC-13E, a six-string “geared toward players who crave an acoustic with the same degree of playability as an electric,” as Guitar World Tech Editor Paul Riario puts it.
The model boasts, among other features: an asymmetrical design; Martin’s patented Sure Align neck system, which offers full access to all frets, including the highest ones; and a newly designed, low-profile velocity neck barrel that ergonomically accommodates the player’s hand as it move up the neck for electric-guitar-like comfort.
Despite its unconventional design, Paul continues, “the tried-and-true SC-13E has become wildly popular.” So much so that, earlier in 2022, Martin launched three additional models – the SC-13E Special, the SC-13E Special Burst and the super-affordable SC-10E, which Paul is only too happy to demo in the above video.
While the SC-10E includes many of the innovative features that made the SC-13E such a players’ dream, the new model takes things a step further. “What I love about the Martin SC-10E is the brand-new ultra-thin satin finish on the body,” Paul says. “It really feels incredibly smooth and it’s awesome to play.”
You also get some “catchy cosmetics and different tonewoods,” including a satin-finished Sitka spruce top and koa fine veneer back and sides, as well as a black-and-white aperture rosette inlay complimented by an ebony headplate, fingerboard and bridge and black tuners and knobs.
Of course, Paul continues, the SC-10E also comes equipped with the “unique architecture and revolutionary designs of the SC-13E, like the Sure Align neck system, Tone Tension X-bracing and asymmetrical body shape with a dramatically sloped cutaway.”
Paul’s verdict? “Martin Guitar put its best foot forward with the more affordable SC-10E, which goes above and beyond what an acoustic is capable of in terms of playability and tone.”
