Looking for the best new gear to make sure this summer is the hottest yet? Look no further than Guitar World’s Summer Ultimate Gear Guide.
Tune in with Guitar World’s Paul Riario and Alan Chaput as they select guitars, guitars and more guitars…and a great guitar case to put ‘em all in, in this new and fourth installment.
First up is Vox’s Bobcat V90 and S66 electrics, which offer classic Vox vibe in a fully modern guitar.
Vox has kept the historic design of these mid-‘60s models unchanged, but brought them up to date by improving their playability, controlling acoustic feedback and raising the performance of the pickups.
Both guitars sport vintage cool looks, with pickguards and pickups based on the original Bobcat. There’s also similar-colored plastic, and like the original, the new models’ knobs are aluminum. Even the headstock logos reproduce the vertical orientation of the ‘60s version for a cool retro feel.
Add in upgraded pickups, Grover open-gear tuners, maple plywood bodies with a weight-relieved spruce centerblock, mahogany necks and Indonesian ebony fingerboards, as well as cool new Sunburst, Cherry Red and sleek Black finishes, and you have some Bobcats with serious growl.
If your tastes lean more modern and metal? Feast your eyes – and ears – on Dean’s MD24 F Roasted Maple guitar. In addition to two striking finishes – Vintage Blue and fiery Vintage Orange – the guitar boasts a solid basswood body with a Flat Top and a contoured arm cut, bolt-on construction, a 25.5’’ scale, Grover 18:1 tuners and black hardware.

There’s also, of course, a roasted maple neck, which features a player-friendly “C” shape, dual-action truss rod and a satin finish. The matched fingerboard, meanwhile, has a 12” radius, 24 jumbo frets and abalone dot inlays.
And because this is Dean, the MD24 comes fully shred-ready, with a Floyd 1000 Series tremolo system and direct-mount Seymour Duncan TB5/APH-1 sandblasted Zebra pickups.
And for a primo case to transport your new Vox and Dean axes, look no further than Gator’s new ICON Series Gig Bags. Equipped with an extremely durable, semi-rigid construction and a sleek appearance, ICON Series bags are crafted specifically with the career musician in mind.
