Looking for the best new gear to make sure this summer is the hottest yet? Look no further than Guitar World’s Summer Ultimate Gear Guide.
In this fifth installment, Guitar World’s Paul Riario and Alan Chaput select guitars, amps and basses that are guaranteed to keep your music sizzling.
The two kick things off with Gibson’s stunning new cherry red Orianthi SJ-200 acoustic, designed in conjunction with the Australian virtuoso who has played with everyone from Alice Cooper to Richie Sambora to Michael Jackson, as well as recently released an awesome new solo album, O.
The high-end, hybrid stunner boasts an AAA Sitka spruce top and maple back, with an easy-playing neck modeled on Gibson's ES-345 electric. Other features include a Cherry nitrocellulose lacquer finish, gold Grover Keystone tuners, and a lotus flower-adorned pickguard and fingerboard.
Electronics-wise, the Orianthi sports an LR Baggs system, with an under-saddle piezo pickup and soundhole-mounted preamp.
Same full SJ-200 sound, but with faster playability and electronics to boot. A winner all around.
On the amp front, Paul and Alan check out PRS’s Archon, which was recently returned to production after being pulled from the company’s lineup earlier this year.

And lucky for us, it's back. A two-channel – clean and lead – heavyweight, the new Archon is available in the form of a 50-watt 1x12 combo or a 50-watt head with matching 1x12 and 2x12 cabinets.
Designed with five gain stages before the master volume, the lead channel's gain controls are voiced by PRS to offer tonal variety that spans from tight, traditional rock punchiness to blistering metal roar, while the clean channel boasts significant headroom, making it an ideal pedal platform.
There’s also a pair of 6CA7 power tubes, as well as volume, bright switch, treble, middle, bass and master controls for each channel, in addition to global presence and depth controls.
Finally, Paul and Alan turn us on to Spector’s Bantam 5 five-string bass. Boasting Spector's carved-and-contoured NS body style and available in three finishes – Black Cherry, Black Satin and Solid White – the 32-inch scale Bantam 5 sports a chambered European alder body with a figured maple top, three-piece maple neck and 22-fret rosewood fingerboard.
Electronics come via a pair of EMG 40DC pickups complete with an EMG BTC active EQ circuit for “maximum versatility,” while controls include Volume, Pickup Blend and a stacked Treble/Bass.
Other features include black hardware, sealed die-cast tuners and a Spector-designed lightweight locking bridge, and the deep-inset bolt-on neck ensures “utmost resonance and projection” while providing an effortless playing experience.
