Epiphone debuts downsized Les Paul and SG models in new learner-friendly Power Players range
Available in Lava Red and Ice Blue, the guitars feature legendary body shapes in a 3/4+ size, 22.73” scale lengths and slimmer necks for younger players, while delivering robust tuning and impressive tones
Epiphone has unveiled its all-new range of Power Players electric guitars, which comprises downsized, 22.73”-scale versions of its legendary SG and Les Paul models.
Arriving in a handful of colors – Ice Blue, Lava Red and a DTX-exclusive Dark Matter – the entry level guitars are the ideal platform for aspiring young musicians looking to start or improve their guitar-playing journey, offering the best of what Epiphone has to offer in easy-to-play packages.
Despite the humble sizes, the Epiphone Power Players models are not toys, and are instead hard-rocking electric guitars in their own right. They’ve got the foundations of every SG and Les Paul – namely, impressive mahogany builds – as well as authentic humbuckers and electronics.
Of course, some tweaks have been made due to the size, but this doesn’t compromise on performance. In terms of tone, high quality tuners and a wraparound tailpiece – which also gives a vintage Gibson aesthetic flair – promise robust tuning stability despite the smaller scale lengths. This is an ideal appointment for learners, who will get to spend more time playing and less time worrying about tuning.
These models cater to younger players, and as such both the SG and Les Paul models feature a number of specs that will accelerate their learning. The slimmer neck profile means smaller hands will be able to navigate the fretboard with less difficulty, while the ¾+ size will make for a more comfortable and easy playing experience. Likewise, the more forgiving string action will make fretting first chords and solos much easier.
And, as an added bonus, learners will also be able to make their way to the upper-end of the fretboard in no time thanks to the sculpted neck heel, which provides seamless access to the higher register.
Aside from that, though, the Power Player models are basically your standard high-quality Epiphone guitars. In terms of specs, the Les Paul boasts a mahogany body and bolt-on neck, both of which are treated to single ply binding.
Elsewhere, the SlimTaper D-profile neck is topped with Trapezoid inlays, a full 22 frets and a quality Indian laurel fretboard for thick Epiphone tones. The hardware and electronics are equally impressive, comprising Epiphone 650R and 700T humbuckers, a three-way selector switch and a set of two volume and two tone controls.
The SG is effectively the same – though swaps one legendary body shape for another – offering a mahogany body, bolt-on mahogany neck, Indian laurel fretboard and a pair of Epiphone humbuckers.
Not only do the Power Players models give learners a high quality platform to kickstart their musical journey, they also give younger players the opportunity to get a slice of genuine Epiphone action at a fraction of the usual cost.
Further still, Power Players models will also grant learners the opportunity to play the guitars they associate with their heroes – fans of Slash, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Samantha Fish and Sister Rosetta Tharpe will be able to quickly advance on the instrument by playing a robust, reliable model that will help them build their confidence.
Having said that, these guitars are not limited to bedroom practice. For more experienced players – and those that grow up with these models – the Power Players instruments represent ideal travel guitar options, thanks to their humble, easy-to-transport sizes.
Did we mention they come with a gig bag, guitar strap, guitar picks and a guitar cable, too? No? Well, they do, making the Epiphone Power Players the ideal plug-in-and-play learner instruments all for just $279.
