Cort’s new G290 FAT II offers pro-level performance and versatility at a working musician’s price
Updated model boasts alder body, roasted maple neck and Voiced Tone VTH-77 humbuckers with custom pickup switching
Cort first unveiled its G290 FAT electric guitar in 2019, and the model quickly attracted a legion of fans. So much so, that the company has now graced us with an updated, even more drool-worthy version of the guitar, the G290 FATII, which has also just received Guitar World's prestigious "Gold Award."
“Once you pick it up, you’ll know right away that this is a serious and worthy electric that should be on your radar,” Guitar World Tech Editor Paul Riario says in the above video. We couldn’t agree more.
First up in the new addition department, the FAT II boasts an alder body in place of the original’s swamp ash design. “And what’s cool,” Paul says, “is the offset body feels snug pressed against you, with a generous belly carve and soft forearm contour that provides hours of playing comfort.”
The earlier model’s birds eye maple neck has also been swapped for a roasted maple neck and fingerboard. The neck features an Ergo-V profile “that’s closer to a fuller ‘60s C-shape,” Paul says, “with a soft satin finish on the back,” and boasts an “easy-to-burn-on” 12-inch-to-15.75-inch compound fretboard radius with 22 immaculately-dressed frets.
The flame maple top is offered in an all-new Trans Burst Black finish in addition to the original Antique Violin Burst and Bright Blue Burst colorways, and other features include Cort’s Staggered Locking tuners and CFA-III stainless steel bridge, as well as Luminlay side dots and a Graph Tech Black TUSQ nut. “It’s impossible not to notice the top-notch componentry,” Paul says. “Everything about the Cort G290 FATII appears elevated.”
As for electronics, the guitar comes loaded with Voiced Tone VTH-77 direct mount pickups in brushed nickel that, Paul explains, “are merged with a custom pickup wiring system with a five-way switch that offers single-coil sparkle in the second and fourth positions and full body humbucker roar in the other positions.”
In short, Paul says, “The Cort G290 FATII comes complete with all the necessary upgrades that many players desire and at a price that fits within most working musicians’ budgets. It’s an undeniably versatile and pro-level instrument with studio-quality tones and playability that far exceeds its competition.”
