"He pointed out that dirt was the only thing missing from H9’s bag of tricks. One of our lead developers and resident bassist, Russell Wedelich, took on the challenge. CrushStation is the result of that effort."

Eventide has created 10 CrushStation presets to help show the range of sounds possible:

1. Fra Diavolo (a spicy metal preset)
2. In the process Eventide also cut musicians a very sweet deal as the H9 Max comes fully loaded with all 45 H9 algorithms but costs about $500 less than buying an H9 and purchasing algorithms for download individually.

Since the H9 Max is identical to the H9 with the exception of its full selection of algorithms, I’ll focus more on algorithms and sounds in this review. For more in-depth details about the hardware, please refer to the H9 review in the November 2013 issue of Guitar World.

FEATURES The H9 Max is a professional-quality pedal featuring true stereo 1/4-inch inputs and outputs, a 1/4-inch expression pedal jack, mini USB connector, side-mounted MIDI In and Out/Thru jacks, and bypass on/off and tap tempo footswitches. Preset selection and parameter programming can be controlled via the Hotknob, presets, and x, y, and z switches and a large jog wheel/switch on the top panel. However, those who like to dig deep into programming effects will prefer to use the free H9 Control app, which allows users to control the H9 Max remotely with an iOS device or computer via Bluetooth wireless communication.

The H9 Max’s algorithms come from Eventide’s acclaimed Factor series and Space pedals and also include three H9 exclusive algorithms—UltraTap, Resonator, and EQ Compressor. TimeFactor algorithms are delay-based and consist of Digital Delay, Vintage Delay, Tape Echo, Mod Delay, Ducked Delay, Band Delay, Filter Pong, MultiTap, Reverse, and Looper. Modulation algorithms come from the ModFactor and include multiple types of Chorus, Phaser, Wah, Flanger, ModFilter, Rotary, Tremolo, Vibrato, Undulator, and Ringmod. The PitchFactor algorithms consist of Eventide’s legendary Harmonizer effects and include Diatonic, PitchFlex, Quadravox, Octaver, HarModulator, Crystals, MicroPitch, HarPeggiator, H910/H949, and Synthonizer. Space reverb algorithms consist of Room, Plate, Spring, Hall, Reverse, Shimmer, ModEchoVerb, DualVerb, Blackhole, MangledVerb, TremoloVerb, and DynaVerb.

PERFORMANCE Eventide effects are truly in a class of their own, especially when it comes to the delay, modulation, pitch/Harmonizer, and reverb effects found in the H9 Max. These are professional-quality, high-resolution, sophisticated effects that until only a few years ago were once the exclusive territory of expensive rack-mount units with powerful processors. The quality and variety of effects packed into the compact H9 Max pedal is simply astonishing.

The PitchFactor algorithms are simply the best pitch shifting and Harmonizer effects available. The tracking is lightning fast, and the pitch accuracy is dead on. I particularly love how easy it is to program natural-sounding six-string bass, baritone, and 12-string guitar sounds. The TimeFactor algorithms cover ever type of delay a guitarist could want, from sparkling digital effects to warm tape echoes. The ModFactor algorithms are very useful and can save guitarists a ton of money otherwise spent on dozens of standalone modulation effects pedals (although only one algorithm can be used at a time). The Space reverb algorithms bring true studio-quality sound to the stage, and the reverbs are equally useful in the recording studio as well.

The H9 Control app greatly simplifies the process of programming effects and makes it easy to select a desired preset in an instant but the pedal operates just as seamlessly without being tethered to an iOS device. The pedal itself stores 99 presets, but users can save an unlimited number of presets on their iOS device or computer. The Bluetooth connection is very reliable. Being able to control the H9 Max with an iPad on stage brings incredible creative and expressive power to guitarists who love to improvise or make extensive use of effects. Perhaps the best benefit of the H9 Max is knowing that you’re not forced to compromise since Eventide’s entire library of algorithms is available whenever you want or need it.

LIST PRICE $799
MANUFACTURER Eventide Inc., eventide.com

Contains all 45 Eventide TimeFactor, ModFactor, PitchFactor, Space, and H9-exclusive algorithms for less than purchasing individual algorithms. The free H9 Control app allows an iOS device or computer to communicate with the H9 via a wireless Bluetooth connection.

A large jog wheel/switch makes it easy to select presets, adjust parameters, or control expression pedal functions directly from the H9 Max itself.

THE BOTTOM LINE The fully loaded H9 Max is by far the best bargain in professional- and studio-quality effects ever offered by a stomp box-format effect unit, providing literally hundreds of effects with superb sound.

http://www.guitarworld.com/review-eventide-h9-max-video#comments Eventide Eventide H9 July 2015 Videos Effects News Gear Magazine Wed, 03 Jun 2015 17:17:26 +0000 Chris Gill 24512 at http://www.guitarworld.com Eventide Announces H9 Max Spring Giveaway: Win an H9 MAX Stompbox http://www.guitarworld.com/eventide-announces-h9-max-spring-giveaway-win-h9-max-stompbox
Eventide is pleased to celebrate spring in a way that all musicians can relate to—free gear!

Simply sign up for Eventide's newsletter to be eligible to win an H9 Max stompbox ($799 MSRP).

The contest starts today (April 1) and ends midnight, May 7, 2015. However, each pedal offered its own respective selection of delay, modulation, pitch or reverb algorithms, so a substantial investment was still required if you wanted the complete set of great Eventide sounds.

With the introduction of the H9 Harmonizer Effects Processor, getting access to the full range of Eventide effects has become more affordable than ever. In addition to being Eventide’s most compact and streamlined pedal to date, the H9 comes with eight of the most popular algorithms from the Factor Series and Space pedals and ups the ante with the exclusive new H9 UltraTap algorithm.

An additional 33 algorithms are available for purchase via the free H9 Controller iOS app and iTunes (the first is free, while the remainder are $19.99 each), which allow users to download any algorithm they want or need without paying for ones that they don’t.

Features
The H9 pedal boasts a stunning streamlined, but powerful, design, packing the effect-processing capabilities of a rack unit into a stomp-box format with a compact footprint measuring just 4 5/8 inches wide by 5 1/4 inches long. Features include bypass on/off and tap-tempo footswitches, side-mounted MIDI in and out/thru jacks, pairs of stereo 1/4-inch output and input jacks, an expression pedal jack, a mini USB connector, and a jack for a 9–12VDC/500mA center-positive power source (the pedal ships with a nine-volt adapter). Although the H9 lacks the dedicated parameter knobs of the Factor/Space pedals, it provides X, Y and Z buttons and a large jog wheel/switch. In Normal mode, the wheel provides instant access to three popular or user-selected parameters, while in Expert mode it lets you scroll through all of the parameters. The jog wheel is also used for manually selecting presets when the preset button is engaged, and it functions like an expression pedal when the HotKnob button is on.

Built-in Bluetooth wireless communication allows users to control the H9 remotely with an iOS device and the H9 Controller app. The software provides access to algorithms, presets, preset lists on up to five registered H9 pedals and the iOS device, the iTunes store, pedal settings and app settings. When an algorithm is selected, the app automatically switches to the preset window, which displays individual virtual knobs and switches for each parameter, along with a virtual ribbon controller that can adjust settings for two different parameters simultaneously in real time. The preset window also offers an XY pad tab, which turns the iOS device into an XY pad controller that lets users adjust any two parameters simultaneously by moving a finger along the touchpad surface. The XY pad also includes rubberband, gyroscope and tilt settings that can create some very unusual and distinctive sound effects.

Performance
When it comes to professional-quality delay, modulation, pitch and reverb effects, Eventide remains in a class of its own. The H9 fully lives up to the company’s well-deserved reputation, delivering pristine, noise-free effects with luxurious sheen, depth and detail. The nine algorithms—two from each Factor/Space pedal, plus the unique H9 UltraTap algorithm—provide a great selection of Eventide’s most popular effects. While it will cost users an extra $640 to have access to all of the Factor/Space algorithms (minus the TimeFactor’s Looper, which isn’t available), the overall cost for the H9 and all of the extra algorithms is about $660 less than buying the four individual Factor/Space pedals.

Although the H9 stores 99 presets internally (an unlimited number of presets can be stored on the external iOS device), only one effect at a time is instantly accessible from the unit’s footswitch, and an external MIDI controller is necessary should you want to access several different effects during a song. Algorithm switching is almost instantaneous, and transitions from one effect to another are smooth and seamless. While many products include built-in tuners these days, the H9’s tuner provides better performance, accuracy and speed than most standalone tuners. Thanks to the sophisticated yet easy to use programming capabilities of H9 Controller app, the H9 places incredible power in a pedal format that dedicated sound designers and stomp-box luddites can appreciate alike.

List Price $579; optional algorithms are $19.99 each via iTunes
Manufacturer Eventide Inc., eventide.com

Cheat Sheet
Provides access to up to 42 different Eventide effect algorithms from the company’s Factor and Space pedals, including delays, modulation effects, pitch shifting and reverbs.

Nine algorithms ship with each H9, including the unique H9 UltraTap, while the remainder are available from the iTunes store for purchase and download.

The free H9 Controller app for iOS devices (iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch) allows users to program and control the H9 wirelessly via Bluetooth.

A large jog wheel/switch makes it easy to assign parameters, select presets or control expression pedal functions directly from the H9 unit itself.

The Bottom Line
Combining the processing power of Eventide’s pro-quality rackmount effects in a stomp-box format with wireless control via Bluetooth and an iOS device, the H9 makes Eventide’s incredible effects more accessible than ever.

http://www.guitarworld.com/review-eventide-h9-harmonizer-effect-processor#comments Eventide November 2013 Effects News Gear Tue, 17 Sep 2013 14:53:53 +0000 Chris Gill 19189 at http://www.guitarworld.com Total Recall: Five Essential Programmable Delay Pedals http://www.guitarworld.com/total-recall-five-essential-programmable-delay-pedals
Rock guitarists — and manufacturers of effect pedals — have been obsessed with delay in its many forms since Cliff Gallup achieved that ultra-cool delayed-echo effect on the first few Gene Vincent albums in the mid-'50s.

The mechanics behind basic delay are simple: Play a note or chord into an audio-storage medium, then get that device to play that sound back to you — either once or multiple times — after whatever amount of time makes you happy.

Of course, people have improved upon this simple formula, taking delay to new depths and heights, adding multi-taps, reverse, looping and stereo, often including a seemingly infinite assortment of combinations in one pedal.

Which brings us to the story you're reading right now, our guide to five of the most powerful, versatile and useful programmable delay pedals on the market today. By programmable, we're talking about pedals that offer numerous (more than, say, four, for instance) presets that make changing your sound on the fly effortless — and the results limitless.

Like our last gear feature, this list was compiled by a group of Guitar World staffers, including Technical Editor Paul Riario. As always, these five pedals are presented in no particular order.

Strymon TimeLine

For maximum tweakabilitiy and sheer processing power, virtually nothing surpasses the TimeLine from Strymon.

With the ability to save up to 200(!) presets, you can take full advantage of the TimeLine's 12 delay engines, each of which are further customizable by the unit's front panel controls for Time, Repeats, Mix, Filter, Grit, Mod Speed and Mod Depth.

Add in the ultra-powerful SHARC digital signal processor and you might just have more than enough brain power to take Apollo 11 to the moon — or, at the very least, create some killer delay sounds!

MSRP: $449 | Learn more about this pedal here.

Empress Effects Superdelay

Don't let the compact size of the Empress Superdelay fool you into thinking you're somehow getting an inferior delay experience.

Packing 2.8 seconds of delay time and eight modes — normal, tap, autoset (delay time is set by tempo played), reverse, rhythm mode (multi-tap), tape mode, misc (dynamic, gate) and 12-second looper — into a box smaller than 6 inches wide, the Superdelay provides a solid range of sounds that will never coat your signal with an unwanted digital sheen.

Its eight presets may seem limiting to some of you delay junkies out there, but for the average guitarist who wants to add some unpredictability or texture to a solo, the Empress Superdelay will fit nicely in any pedalboard.

MSRP: $449 | Learn more about this pedal here.

With more than 40 years of design experience and musical experimentation to draw on, we're in the midst of a golden age for effect pedal users and makers. We've never actually tried that (although there a few nice delis down the block where we can give it a shot). Regardless, EHX definitely threw the works into this brilliant pedal.

Along those lines, the Electro-Harmonix Stereo Memory Man with Harzai has eight modes, including four echo modes (modulation, multi-tap, reverse and a looper), letting you create everything from ethereal tone-scapes (Feel free to insert other dreamy-sounding nouns here) to full musical performances, and it's all in stereo.

There are three multi-tap modes and two Deja Vu modes. Its Looper offers up to 30 seconds of loop time. All in all, world-class echoes with modulation and reverse are just some of the many choices.

Basically, the pedal — like many others on this list — offers an incredibly wide range of choices and, therefore, provides endless sonic possibilities.

MSRP: $294 | Learn more about this pedal here.

Eventide TimeFactor

Lots of big names over the years have relied on Eventide, from Brian May, Eddie Van Halen and Steve Vai to Robert Fripp, John Petrucci and Adrian Belew. The cool thing about the TimeFactor, however, is that it — for the first time — collects all those guys' sought-after delay effects into one good-looking pedal.

The TimeFactor offers 10 effects: DigitalDelay; VintageDelay; TapeEcho; ModDelay; DuckedDelay; BandDelay; FilterPong; MultiTap; Reverse; and Looper. Some of these might be self-explanatory (for instance, if you're forming a Gene Vincent tribute band, head for the VintageDelay or TapeEcho). As for some of the others, Reverse provides a psychedelic-sounding backwards effect; Mod Delay adds chorus-style modulation effects; DuckedDelay lowers the level of the repeats when you’re playing, and brings them back to their normal level when you stop playing; Looper offers up to 12 seconds of looping with dubbing and speed control.

Even though this pedal might seem a little overwhelming at first, getting the tone you're after is pretty easy. The top row of controls includes main mix, delay 1&2 time, delay 1&2 feedback, delay 1&2 balance. The tier of controls let you make changes corresponding to the particular type of delay you're using.

Here's Paul Riario's video review of the TimeFactor from 2008.

MSRP: $399 | Learn more about this pedal here.

TC Electronic Nova Delay

Not only is the Nova Delay from TC Electronic a powerful weapon for the delay-happy musician, it also wins some points for ease of use. While it's no stretch to say that all the Nova's digital delay effects are studio-quality, fast switching between presets means it's also the live guitarist's best friend.

The Nova Delay features six stereo delay types — line, dynamic, reverse, ping-pong, pan and slap-back — each of which can be further tweaked using the pedal's style parameters. A 2290-ms delay time leaves room for plenty of tail, and the ability to calculate delay time using milliseconds or beats per minute makes for maximum flexibility, not to mention a nice perk for use with a metronome.

Perhaps the coolest feature on the Nova Delay is its patented Audio Tapping technology, which "enables you to set the tempo of the delay by playing a rhythm into the pedal while holding down the tap tempo switch." One more thing that just screams for the Nova to be put front-and-center in your live rig.

MSRP: $345 | Learn more about this pedal here.

Can't get enough gear?
